Online vs. Offline Retailer Sales Trends in Australia
Australian sales trends have had their ups and downs over the past year. There has been much speculation over whether online sales are cutting into the traditional, or offline sales, and this report sheds some light into the differences. 2012 was a year of fluctuations for online retail, with growth peaking near 30% in February then dropping to below 20% in April, before recovering to 25% in July. The last recorded data from NAB’s Online Retail Sales Index, collected in October; growth was steady at 26%. In contrast offline retail sales growth languished at sub-5% levels all year, with some months recording decreases. In November, the more recent run of ABS retail trade figures, there was no change in sales month on month. Here are …

Does Your Website Engage?
Web hits, click throughs, and page views are all ways to measure Website engagement, but they don’t tell the entire story about whether a Website is engaging its audience. Not all metrics are created equal nor are they useful for every audience. Take the various news portals, like Yahoo, Drudge, etc. They get tens of millions of hits from surfers who may stay there only long enough to scan the headlines. Is there stickiness? No. Will news hounds be back later in the day? You bet. Since the news portals have heavy ad traffic, one must figure that this mode of marketing is working well for them. Some Websites are going to be limited in their audiences through no fault of their own. They may …

What’s Your “Consumer Mix?”
Every product or brand strives to appeal to a consumer who seems most likely to embrace the brand, because of the consumer’s demographic or the product’s unique selling features, to embrace the brand. There are customer relationship management (CRM) software systems available that can sift through thousands of characteristics to paint a portrait of what the ideal customer for the product looks like, demographically speaking. Industries routinely talk about their “sweet spot,” the crosspoint of consumer demographics and product features that make it most likely a given person will buy a product. But what then? After the product is marketed to the most likely customers–the “low hanging fruit”–the product then must be marketed to those outside the sweet spot. They too must be given reasons …

Does Google Lag in Converting Looks to Shares?
Recent research suggests Google + may be a laggard in converting lookie-loos into sharing customers, compared to other popular Websites. The results were compiled into a infographic by Australian firm allinforgraphics. The research was conducted by umpf.co.uk. Here are the highlights: Google+ claims 170 million users, versus Facebook’s 900 million plus users, LinkedIn’s 160 million users and Twitter’s 140 million users. The research took the number of shares for 100 online stories from each source listed above. Not surprisingly, Twitter–because of its ease of use and immediate-ness, led the pack with 197 shares; Facebook came in second with 41; LinkedIn took the bronze with 15.2; and Google+ finished out of the money with a mere 6 shares. Compared to Google+, LinkedIn users were 2.5 times …

Australian Firm Wants to Put You in the News(room)
It’s an new age problem. How do entrepreneurs get their message out in a world already crowded with thousands of channels, and millions of websites all clamoring for attention? Is it better to stake your little island and think of a way to draw customers to it, or is it better to climb aboard the crowded portal and hope somebody notices. It’s still an issue, but at least one Adelaide marketing company has developed a concept that allows businesses to deliver their message for a fraction of what it once cost. The idea is called a Video Newsfeed and it entails businesses delivering their message in a newsroom setting and having it broadcast to the world. Video Newsfeed was developed by Craig Douglas, CEO of …
