Do You Need a Logo Makeover? Branding Rules for Logos

Logos can be very valuable for a business and help a great deal with branding. Especially in today’s digital world, logos are very important when it comes to helping your business get recognised, remembered and stand out among the competition. Here are 5 rules for branding from the MarketingProfs.

1. The Right Fit

Is your logo appropriate for you and your industry? Some industries have a theme in terms of logos; if you’re not in step with the rest of the crowd, you could get left behind.

2. Simplicity

Complex images are harder for your target audience to recall. Simple is better with many things and especially with logos in this case.

3. Avoiding Special Effects

Similar to the point above about simplicity, keep the special effects of shadows and characters to a minimum. Do not use crazy fonts that are hard to read.

4. Colour Connections

A couple months ago we featured an entire article on How Colours Affect Your Logo.  Colours carry meaning (and they can vary by culture). A little research can help you decide which colours may best suit your brand. If you’ve already got an established brand colour scheme, make sure your logo ties into it well. Keep the colour selection down to 2-4 colours, if at all possible.

5. Functional Big and Small

Your logo should be recognisable in both big and small sizes. Whether it is the size of a house, in the corner or a paper, or in the tab at the top of the web browser, it should be legible and recognisable.
