Is there really a not-to-distant future right out of a science fiction film with delivery drones flying through the air making door to door deliveries? Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is trying to make that a reality. He announced last week that he is not kidding at all, he means business and expects to have his Air Prime same day delivery fleet ready by 2015.

Check out the video of the test drones in action. The goal with the unmanned delivery drones is going to be delivery in 30 minutes. There are definitely more questions than answers and more doubts  than assurances, but if any company can pull it off, it would be Amazon. The restrictions for drone delivery will be that the package must be less than 5 pounds and will be within 10 miles of the Amazon fulfillment warehouse. So even though the drone delivery will be limited, Amazon still has driver same day delivery options in the works and there is even talk in the rumor mill that Amazon wants to purchase the U.S. Post Office and run it. The U.S. Post Office is known for being unreliable and consistently losing money. However, the government giving up control over one of their oldest institutions is unlikely.

How will smaller retailers be able to compete with this level of speed and service? It is hard to fathom trying to compete with the giant e-tailer, however personalised service says a great deal and support of small businesses is trending on the rise.
