Pinterest v. Facebook: Tale of the Tape

A study of 50,000 Australian Internet users and the accompanying infographic has shown considerable light on how Australians view and use Facebook and its upstart rival, Pinterest.

According to the study:

  • Pinterest drives more sales than Facebook. Pinterest was said to have influenced 10 percent of sales, versus 7 percent for Facebook.
  • But, Pinterest users are not as engaged as Facebook users, which might have something to do with the shorter time Pinterest has been around so its users have not developed as much of a habit of posting as Facebook users.
  • But, Pinterest users spend more than Facebook users, almost twice as much at $180. This too might be a function of demographics as Facebook hits a larger percentage of the population. But, it does point out Pinterest as a kind of upscale market marketers crave.

Also, keep in mind that just because a group of Facebook users is doing something and a group of Pinterest users is doing something else, these groups are not mutually exclusive, and one would not be surprised to find that the Pinterest crowd and the Facebook crowd have many of the same members, or that most of the Pinterest user base got started in social media on Facebook.
