67% of Australian Tweens Use Social Media

If your target audience is the tween market, and if you previously thought most tweens were not using social media because of the age restrictions, think again! Despite the 13 year old age restrictions on most social media sites, two out of three Aussie Tweens are using some form of social media online. These new statistics are in courtesy of a McAfee survey of 500 young Aussies. That figure includes 28% who use Skype and 26% who use Facebook. Although parents may not be too happy with that, it is still something to keep in mind when marketing to an untapped target market of tween social media users.
Even if directly targeting tweens is not part of the normal online marketing strategy, keeping in mind that they are online and have the potential to seeing your ads is a big bonus because of the spending power of the emerging tween market in relation to the entire Australian spending overall. This is exciting statistic to be available considering previous studies  really only bundles computer usage in general and compared it to other tween and teen activities like watching television and playing video games.
