The Power of In-Person Meetings

In this digital age we live in, it often seems like “it’s a small world”. However, the advancements in technology that bring us closer together also often interfere with personal connections. There is something to be said about the old fashioned hand shake greeting, or confirmation of a business deal. The following infographic images are part of a survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Cisco. See what 862 business leaders had to say about the value of in-person meetings and their impact on more than 30 business processes.

In-Person Matters

As you might imagine, business leaders appreciate the value of in-person communications and declare them to be more effective, powerful, and conducive to successful business transactions.

  • 75% believe in-person collaboration is critical.
  • 54% agree that gauging engagement and focus is critical to communications.
  • 82% felt they were better understood after in-person encounters.

Top Motivations for In-Person Interactions

The survey concluded that the top three motivations for in-person interactions among customers, partners, and colleagues are (1) resolving major problems more efficiently, (2) generating long-term relationships, and (3) resolving a problem or creating an opportunity quickly. It can be concluded that in-person interactions benefit inter-company communications as well as sales and client relations.

Keys to Successful Communications

Even with the efficiency of digital or phone communications, there is still much to be said about in-person interactions, the facial expressions, body language, and even tone of voice, which can often be misinterpreted in email or other digital communications.

Conclusion & Summary:

The next time you have a chance to go to a conference, trade show, or exhibition, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity. Every meeting does not have to be in-person, but once you do meet in-person, future business seems to be able to proceed more efficiently. If you believe in the power of in-person meetings and interactions, put it in your agenda and goals now to have more personal engagements in the office and in other situations like trade shows, exhibitions, and conferences. Perhaps consider adding in teleconferencing technology for situations where you cannot meet in person.
